Search Engine

The fire department open house is coming up soon, and we have fun stuff planned for the community. We’ll be giving tours of the station and showing off the engine that replaced our 25-year-old truck (the vendor modified the lights to fit through the garage door, but it’s a tight squeeze). We’ll present fire safety information for the holidays and year round, and have a fire safety coloring contest and a scavenger hunt. The firefighters and auxiliary are doing a chili cook-off, and we’ll have treats and a carol sing. We’re asking the community to bring donations of canned goods or 9 volt smoke detector batteries for the local food pantry. We’re expecting a good turn-out.

There are lots of ways to volunteer in your community. My husband has been a volunteer firefighter since before we were married. I’ve worked with the department’s search and rescue team since it was formed in 1990, but I’m not a firefighter. I’m a person who can produce mock hazards to place around the fire station for the kids to locate during a scavenger hunt. I love doing stuff like that, and it frees up firefighters to do other things.

There are lots of jobs that need volunteers in any community. Often, the people getting those jobs done are so busy trying to keep up they don’t have time to holler for help. But they sure appreciate it when you offer.
